School fruit scheme
 
School Fruit Scheme aims to supply fruit and vegetables, processed fruit and vegetables and banana products to children in regular attendance at the educational establishments.
 
Information
School Fruit Scheme will be applied on a pilot basis to public and private primary schools in the region of Attica and Thessaloniki.

Implementation Period of the “School Fruit Scheme 2010 – 2011” is the school year 2010 – 2011.

The budget of the scheme, including the Community and national contribution, for all member-states during 2010 – 2011, is 2.221.083 €.
 
Scheme’s objectives
  1. The overturning of the declining consumption of fruits and vegetables.
  2. The steady increase in the share of vegetables in the diet of children at the stage where eating habits are formed.
  3. The improvement of children's eating habits and consequently the reduction of childhood obesity rates.
  4. The achievement of the Common Agricultural Policy goals, including the increase of the income of the agricultural sector, the stabilization of markets and the availability of current and future supplies.

Authorities responsible for the implementation of the Project
  • Ministry of Rural Development and Food
  • Ministry of Education Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs
  • Ministry for Health and Social Solidarity
OPEKEPE and more specifically the Payment of Agricultural Aid Directorate is responsible for:
  • conducting competitions
  • selection of contractors
  • signing of final contracts
  • implementation and monitoring of the program till the identification and the settlement of selected execution entities payment files.
Execution entity may be any public or private body selected through competition.
 
Community aid is addressed to children in regular attendance at one of the educational establishments administered or recognized by the competent authorities of a Member State.
